Building Phases

The Foundation

Every good build starts with a solid foundation. Putting time and energy into this, which is not always seen with the naked eye, saves time and money in the long run. It makes a tremendous difference when you are ready to tackle the next phases. The precision work in the beginning will make all other trades come together.

The Framing

A tighly framed job is very important. Framing is commonly referred to as something that gets covered up, but we do not look at it that way. Poor framing leads to settling and drywall cracks. Working with wood I realize that things shrink. If it is not tight to start with you will have large gaps down the road, this is where problems occur. I like to see “finish framing” as I call it. I want it put together as if it’s going to be exposed. This creates a solid structure with good bones.

The Timber Framing

Timber framing is a craft I hold close to my heart. It truly is one of the most satisfying, labor intensive, and beautiful things I do. The key to timber framing is a tight fit and locking components together properly. Working with quality material that is straight and dry is a must. Learning this art of the trade from master craftsmen has been key to my success. I am thankful for that! I call timber framing, “the fun stuff.”

The Building Envelope

A properly sealed exterior building envelope is the key to efficiency. The exterior building envelope separates your cozy home from the elements, heat, cold, and moisture. Windows come with a flange to attach the windows to the framing. That window flange lays behind the waterproof house wrap that is chosen. Once the roof is on and the project is “dried in” is when we set windows and create this envelope. We add to the envelope with a siding of choice on the exterior. We also add the envelope on the inside by adding spray foam around the framing gaps in the windows before insulation. I prefer to spray a 2” layer of foam on the exterior walls then finish insulating with a blow-in blanket. This process seals up the home and is great for R value, noise control, and temperature control. This method does come with added cost so it is aways optional, but if you do choose this, I feel you will see a return in lower energy use and cost down the road.

The Finish Work

When it comes to finish work, everyone has their own style. At this point I like to work closely with the client to ensure their satisfaction with the finished product. I realize that personalities and tastes are unique, so your build should be as well. I enjoy pitching ideas and help as much as needed. To be happy with the outcome I understand there may be changes along the way. I take changes in stride and feel this is where it truly becomes a custom build to you.
